I like repetition, not in an OCD kind of way, but I do like just about any form or shape on repeat. I've talked about my love of the geometric shape repeated in the
retro screen but their is something even more beautiful and complex about the wood slat. While alone it is just a line, it is how they come together to form a rhythm that makes the wood slat such a stunning design solution.
When vertical, they pull the eye upwards.
Or connect us with the earth, when horizontal.
Sometimes the vertical and horizontal collide for a bit of drama.
They can also get a bit erratic.
Or serve an extra purpose.
Once in a while you will find them in color and over lapping one another.
When filled with light they become almost transparent.
Really, it isn't the wood slat itself that is so beautiful but what happens between them. That game of peak-a-boo (or "a-boo" as Frances says) we play with them as they give us just a glimpse of light or just a glimpse of what is on the other side that can allow something as simple as a wood slat to make such a powerful design statement.

TUESDAY PREVIEW: DIY Wood Paneling.
I like the vertical slats surrounding the fireplace. Do you think the entire wood slats concept though is going to get dated soon? Will we roll our eyes at it in 10 years like we do with old school wood paneling?

I could definitely see maybe the more 'erratic' patterned wood slats or those painted a particular color potentially going out of style but I think when the wood is left in its more natural state and presented in a simple repetitive pattern, like that fireplace, it is timeless. Rhythm is a principle of design and wood is always in style.
